MARINE FAUNA & LANDSCAPES

A whales shark sporting a state of the art camera tag on its first dorsal fin. These tags can record up to 20 hours of precious footage before they automatically detach leaving no trace on the whale shark - Rhincodon typus.

Surrounded by endemic butterfly fish, the wreck of the Bedgellet rests on its keel at a depth of 18m - Chaetodon sanctahelenae.

In February, the coastal waters are filled with millions of newly hatched butterfly fish, an endemic emblem of the waters of Saint Helena - Chaetodon sanctahelenae.

The Saint Helene flounder is one of the islands many endemic species, recognisable by its brightly blue-ringed spots - Bothus mellissi.

The beautiful and gentle scrawled filefish during a night dive - Aluterus scriptus.

An island cowfish, a type of boxfish, is a friendly companion on night dives - Acanthostracion notacanthus.

Some wrecks have rather intimidating guards like this fangtooth moray surveying visiting divers from the Bedgellet's bridge - Enchelycore anatina.

Saint Helena's sharp-nosed pufferfish is one of the island's endemic species and is not at all shy with divers - Canthigaster sanctahelenae.

The red-spotted hawkfish is common in rocky reefs and are frequently found resting on their large pectoral fins whilst on the lookout for prey - Amblycirrhitus pinos.

The hedgehog butterflyfish, another endemic species of Saint Helena and Ascension Island - Prognathodes dichrous.

The Saint Helena red slipper lobster resembles a living fossil and is endemic to the South Atlantic islands of St Helena, Tristan Da Cunha and Ascension - Scyllarides obtusus.
